Mobilize private finance.

Increase the amount of commercial finance available to small entrepreneurs promoting sustainable agriculture and food systems in low- and middle-income countries..

Can donors and public funds be more catalytic? Can blended capital be a critical strategy to increase investment in food systems?

In a recent report, the Shamba Centre and the Global Donor Platform for Rural Development (GDPRD) explored how donors, international public funds and philanthropic organisations can make their funding more impactful and serve as a catalyst for achieving SDG2.

A Technical Note is also available to complement the report with more details, including case studies, information about financing mechanisms, and further inputs from the stakeholders interviewed.

Debt-for-nature swaps

Momentum for debt-for-nature swaps is increasing as developing countries face a growing sovereign debt crisis alongside a worldwide urgency to invest in curbing climate change, biodiversity loss and ocean degradation. In addition the debt crisis converges with a food crisis - 18 countries that are in or at a high risk of debt distress also face a high risk of a food crisis.

The Shamba Centre for Food & Climate has published a report that analyses the recent debt-for-nature swaps in Belize, Ecuador and the Seychelles.

The Zero Hunger Private Sector Pledge calls on companies to join the global movement to end hunger.

We invite them to invest, innovate and work with donors and development agencies to change the way food is produced, distributed and consumed.

Funding platform for Zero Hunger

The Shamba Centre is exploring the feasibility of designing and managing a digital funding platform to support match-making between private investors and agri-SMEs in developing countries.

Our goal is to simplify the due diligence process, reduce transaction costs and thereby facilitate access to finance for agri-SMEs.
