The Shamba Centre for Food & Climate has identified multiple interventions that can be implemented to address the negative impact of concentrated market power in agriculture and food markets across Africa.
Below, two interventions that can be actioned immediately.
1./ Scaling up support to mature African competition institutions to enable them to act and enforce laws more effectively.
We are currently supporting mature African competition authorities through technical and legal assistance with market inquiries, cases, and ex-post merger reviews, as well as through the support of a common knowledge base, the African Market Observatory.
2./ Build the capabilities of the nascent African competition institutions.
We are currently supporting the enforcement activities of nascent African competition institutions as well as helping to establish efficient procedures and improve the availability of data and analysis on market conduct. This includes training on technical and legal issues, and the availability of regular market information and analysis through a common knowledge base, the African Market Observatory.
The Shamba Centre supports the African Market Observatory which monitors prices within and across countries in East and Southern Africa at different levels of supply chains.
