Join our World Food Forum webinar on using competition policy to transform food systems

21 September 2023

Farmers in Africa are increasingly reliant upon a small group of companies to purchase their supplies and sell their produce. In agro-commodity trading, transnational corporations effectively govern value chains at the global, regional and national levels. Because extreme weather-related events due to climate change exacerbate production volatility and disrupt supply chain, shocks can be exploited by firms with significant market power.

Competition law and policy used effectively can contribute to fair, resilient and sustainable food systems. To better understand how youth action can trigger reform of competition law and policy, the Shamba Centre for Food & Climate, together with the African Climate Foundation and the Centre for Competition, Regulation and Economic Development, is organizing a virtual side-event as part of the World Food Forum on 20 October from 11h00 – 12h00 CET.

Entitled Transforming food systems in Africa through youth-led reform of competition law and policy, the webinar will bring together young leaders who will share their experiences in agriculture, climate policy and competition reform. They will explore how supporting competition authorities to implement rigorous competition policies and laws is an effective climate adaptation response for African food systems.
