The Global Alliance on Food Security
The Shamba Centre is advising on the overall design and providing expert moderation to the Global Alliance on Food Security (GAFS), which is co-chaired by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the World Bank.
GAFS, supported by the G7, was proposed by the German Minister for Economic Development and Cooperation, Svenja Schulze and World Bank President David Malpass during the World Bank’s Spring Meeting in April 2022. It was launched at the G7 development ministers meeting in Berlin a month later.
The GAFS in designed as a global multi-stakeholder process, working on 5 action tracks:
Create Solidarity Lanes to help Ukraine export agricultural goods
Avoid further hunger with country-led needs assessments, humanitarian response, and expanded social safety nets
Boost sustainable agricultural production for upcoming harvests
Provide regular agricultural market information
Develop a dashboard to consolidate and present data, track financial resources and share research
The Shamba Centre is moderating the action tracks on agriculture market information and sustainable agriculture production. From September onwards, we will also work with the GAFS team at the German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development to monitor the implementation of the GAFS action tracks and further increase its influence.
We are grateful to GIZ for their generous contribution to support this work.
